Off-Grid Photovoltaic Systems are the most reliable solution for covering energy requirements in the absence of a grid or covering those in remote areas where the existence of a grid is difficult and expensive. The off-grid photovoltaic system depend only on the weather conditions prevailing in the installation area.

An off-grid photovoltaic system consists of the Photovoltaic panels, which convert solar irradiation into electricity, the Inverter which converts the direct current produced by the Photovoltaic panels into alternating current for the correct operation of the electrical devices and the Battery for storing the solar energy using a Charge Controller.

In some cases, an alternative source of energy (e.g., a diesel generator) is used to cover loads on days when there is no sunshine and the PV system cannot cover the energy needs.

How to design an off-grid PV system – What is required/considered

  1. The power in Watts of the devices – machines (e.g., refrigerator, air conditioning, lighting, electric drill, etc.)
  2. The starting current of the devices (maximum instantaneous power of devices with a motor)
  3. The time period of use of the devices (e.g., only 3 months in the summer) and the frequency of use of the devices (e.g., 4 hours of television, 6 hours of lighting, etc.)
  4. The days of autonomy you wish. In other words, for how many days we want our PV system with the Battery to cover your energy needs
  5. The exact location of the installation site
